Winter Cereal Varieties

Winter Cereal Varieties 2025

Variety selection is one of the most important decisions for winter cereal growers this autumn and it is worth taking time to study the past performance of cereal varieties both on your own farm and data from DAFM trials.

The DAFM cereal variety recommended list 2025 contains reliable information on each varieties characteristics and performance has been evaluated over a minimum three year period.

Autumn Weed Control

Winter Cereal Weed Control

Weed control in winter cereals can be either pre emergence or post emergence depending on the target weeds and effectiveness of the herbicides used. There is a wide selection of approved herbicides available for use on winter cereal crops so check the susceptibility chart to help choose the most effective product or product mix for each individual field.

Winter Oilseed Rape

Winter Oilseed Rape

The area of winter oilseed rape would appear to be somewhat smaller than 2024 with lack of available land to plant due to the late harvest being the main reason. With the planting season now closed for drilling rape we now turn our attention to managing what has been drilled.

Provisional Costs and returns 2025

Provisional Costs and returns 2025

The updated costs and returns budgets for 2025 make for very interesting reading as growers plan for the upcoming season. They clearly indicate that given the current prices for feed grains that there is little room for poor yields, while some inputs have decreased e.g. seed, others are remaining stubbornly high and so the potential margins as a result are not overly promising. This highlights the need where possible to try to grow for quality grain markets e.g. malting barley, food grade oats etc. Growers should also be aware that these costs do not include rental costs.
