Farmers sign in hereTrace element deficiencies are occurring in almost every field at the moment due to the dry conditions, spring crops are showing up signs more than winter crops and are at risk of losing yield unless we get rain.

For the most part the recent dry weather has reduced disease levels in all cereal crops but particularly spring cereals. However there are isolated cases of net blotch in spring barley (Planet) and there are some reported cases of mildew in thick spring wheat and oats so check each crop before making a decision on fungicide applications.

The recent warm dry weather has sped up crop development with flag leaves emerging quickly. In some cases there may well be less that a three week gap from the leaf 3 fungicide application to the flag leaf application.

Winter oat crops are booting GS 45 at the moment and will start to head out in the coming week or so. The heavy dews in the recent week seem to have allowed mildew to develop but otherwise crops look quite good at the moment.

Growth in fodder beet has slowed due to dry soils and also the impact of recently applied herbicides. A further issue with drying out soils is the poor activity from residual herbicides like Goltix and Venzar.
There are some reports of typical pest problems like leatherjackets but there has also been some damage from flea beetle this year. Flea beetle can be treated with an approved Pyrethroid insecticide

The next few weeks will be vitally important in controlling problem grass weeds in crops, preventing seed return should be the main target to help to reduce the weed burden in the coming years.

Many early planted maincrops are emerging at the moment and have had their herbicides although most of the later planted crops are still to emerge. Fungicide programmes are being developed at the moment to reduce the risk of the blight strain EU43 infecting crops.

The Teagasc crops open day is planned for Wednesday, 25th June at the Teagasc Crops Research Centre in Oak Park, Carlow. The event will cover the latest research on all the main tillage crops and horticultural field crops. It will also include a major machinery demonstration, with a particular focus on sprayers and the technology available for more accurate applications.
