Harvest 2025 Prediction

Harvest 2025

Winter barley harvest is almost complete at this stage with some report of very good yields and good quality, grain moisture was very low last week, as the effect of the warm temperatures really became apparent towards the weekend. Straw volumes seem good at about 14 -15 4X4 bales per acre commonly being quoted.

While it is always difficult to predict what the overall cereal production for the country is at this stage of the harvest based on the areas claimed for the BISS and given the details of crop health and our own experiences over the last few months see below an indication of where we would estimate the potential for the 2025 harvest.

Notes;
1 Preliminary DAFM BPS figures.
* CSO 2023, Area, Yield and Production of Crops.
** Teagasc estimates
$ Yields X Utilisable Area (Area x 0.95)

While these figures are strictly preliminary they would suggest that the current harvest should be larger than that of 2024 or 2023, obviously we won't know the full details for a few months yet.

Stubble Cultivation

Stubble Cultivation

The Nitrates Directive is designed to prevent pollution of surface waters and groundwater from agricultural sources and to protect and improve water quality. As part of the Nitrates Directive, tillage farmers are now required to take measures to establish green cover as soon as possible post-harvest to prevent the pollution of waters caused by nitrates.

Glyphosate Use

Glyphosate Use

Glyphosate can no longer be used for harvest management, this applies to all crops including oilseed rape. This was one of the key changes when glyphosate was reregistered last year.

Potatoes

Potatoes

Crop growth has slowed down with the recent warm dry weather where no irrigation was available. Blight levels are relatively although there have been reports of a number of blight outbreaks lately.

Post Harvest Soil Management

Soil Management

Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture. The post-harvest period offers a critical opportunity for soil management. It's the perfect time to invest in your soil’s long-term vitality. By prioritising soil health now, you're laying the groundwork for greater productivity and resilience in future growing seasons.

Fodder Beet

Fodder Beet

Fodder beet crops have thrived this year thanks to early sowing and favourable growing conditions, with many fields achieving full canopy closure well before the traditional benchmark of the longest day, June 20th.
