Nutrient deficiencies 2026

Recent dry weather has increased soil moisture deficits, particularly in the east, and although more unsettled conditions are forecast this week, rainfall is expected to be uneven with many areas remaining relatively dry.

These conditions restrict nutrient movement to roots and increase the risk of nutrient and trace element deficiencies in spring cereal crops, particularly on lighter soils, high pH sites and later-sown crops.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency symptoms are widespread in rapidly growing crops under stress. Foliar Mg products, such as Epsom salts, may improve crop greening, but yield responses are generally limited except on low Index 1 Mg soils or where deficiencies are severe and persistent.

Magnesium deficiency - patchy pattern

Manganese (Mn) - remains the deficiency most likely to justify treatment, particularly on high pH, organic or poorly consolidated soils.  Prompt foliar Mn application is advised where deficiencies are evident, as delayed applications are less effective.

Manganese deficiency - between wheel tracks

Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) - deficiencies may become evident where dry surface soils are limiting uptake. In this case, granular fertiliser is unlikely to be fully effective without rainfall to move nutrients into the rooting zone, so foliar P or K may help where symptoms are severe.

Phosphorus deficiency

Over the coming week, growers should continue to monitor crops closely and only treat crops where clear deficiency symptoms are present, as blanket trace element applications rarely provide an economic return. Foliar applications should be made during cooler parts of the day to maximise uptake and reduce scorch risk.

Ultimately, meaningful rainfall would alleviate many of the currently observed deficiencies by restoring nutrient mobility and root uptake. Until then, chelated products may offer more reliable uptake than straight inorganic salts under continued moisture stress.
