Winter Wheat

Winter Wheat

Crops have progressed well over the last few weeks with most crops having had their main split of nitrogen applied a few weeks ago. Most crops are up to date with PGR and many received a leaf 4 fungicide to protect against septoria and rust.

Winter Barley

Winter Barley

Winter barley growth stages range from GS32 to awn emergence in some early maturing varieties that were sown early. However the majority of crops are between second last leaf emerged to flag leaf emergence. This is the ideal time for final PGR if it is required. Disease levels are very low and ramularia will be the target for the final fungicide timing at awn emergence.

Spring Cereals

Spring Cereals

Spring 2025 has been excellent, with all spring cereals planted before tillage farmers had even started planting last year. Establishment is excellent due to favourable seedbed conditions at sowing although moisture will be welcome to help growth and to alleviate crop stress on light soils. Growth stages range from emergence to early tillering in early sown crops. Nitrogen application and weed control will be the priority in the coming days.

Winter Oats

Winter Oats

Winter oat crops are generally at GS 32 at the moment which is the key timing for growth regulation. Crops are generally claen and most have receib=ved all their nitrogen at this stage.

Winter Rye

Winter Rye

Crops have become quite tall as normal over the last couple of weeks, with many now approaching flag leaf stage and so they will soon need their final growth regulator application. Some early sown crops in the south have reported that heads are starting to emerge. There are no reports of any disease on crops given the dry weather.

Fodder beet

Fodder Beet

A good proportion of this year fodder beet crop is in the ground but some still remains to be sown as growers await kinder conditions for emergence. The loss of Triflusulfuronmethyl (Debut) makes weed control more difficult especially where brassica weeds are present. Pre-emergence applications of Metamitron (Goltix) or Ethofumesate (Nortron) can add some flexibility to timings but good soil moisture is essential for good performance.
